Bathroom Cleaning Tips
How to Clean Bathrooms -- Part II

Bathroom cleaning tips continued, with specialized cleaning suggestions and recommendations.

-->

It's probably the most dreaded room in a house when it comes to cleaning -- and it may be the main reason people hire house cleaning services. Proper cleaning of a bathroom is crucial for the health of your client as well as the longevity of the bathroom fixtures. With a half an hour and some rubber gloves, you should be able to bring a bathroom back to its squeaky-clean self.

Bathroom Cleaning Tips -- Break the Job Into Parts

First put things away. Before you can even start to clean a bathroom, you need to expose all of the surfaces that need cleaning. So put the dirty towels and laundry away, get things off of the countertop and tidy up those magazines. You'll need to be able to move things as you clean and the less you have to move, the faster the cleaning process will be.

Turn on the fan. When using so many cleaners in such a small room, proper ventilation is important. The fan should run from the moment you start cleaning the bathroom until an hour after you're finished to make sure that the air is safe to breathe.

bathroom cleaning tipsSinks. Begin by rinsing the sinks with hot water. Follow with a good scrubbing and some bathroom cleaner (anything with disinfecting qualities will do here, such as Vim or Mr. Clean Bathroom Cleaner). Don't use an abrasive cleaner on ceramic, as it will scratch. Creams and spray cleaners are your best bet. Rinse the sinks clean and dry with a clean cloth, making sure to remove any water marks from the taps as well.

Countertops. A quick spray and scrub is all you'll need for bathroom countertops. Be sure to spray cleaner only on your countertops as it may damage other items (including your wall paint). Follow the cleaner with a hot, clean cloth. This prevents any streaks after drying.

Mirrors. Once your sinks and counters are clean, there's no more risk of water splashing onto the mirrors. So it's smart to clean them after the sinks are clean. Use Windex or a similar glass cleaner. Bathroom cleaner will most definitely leave streaks, and could scratch the glass. Spray the mirrors with Windex and wipe off using a clean paper towel or cloth.

Toilet. Begin by treating the inside of the toilet with a gel toilet cleaner. Toilet Duck works fine, but anything that will slowly seep down the sides of the toilet is recommended. While the toilet cleaner sits, close the lid and spray the whole toilet with your bathroom cleaner of choice. This includes its undersides, and the handle. Wipe the cleaner off and rinse with a hot, clean cloth. Clean the toilet seat in the same matter, making sure to remove soils from both sides of each lid. Then using a toilet brush, scrub the entire bowl of the toilet until no stains remain and the gel has been completely displaced into the bowl water. Flush the toilet twice.

Tub/shower. For a stone shower, you're going to want to use a stone tile cleaner. Abrasive cleaners and chemicals will absorb into or ruin the stone (this includes granite, marble or slate). These are available at your local hardware store. For a basic tub surround (plastic, glass or fiberglass) you can simply spray it with your bathroom cleaner of choice and leave it to sit for a few minutes. Gel or foam cleaners like Vim or Scrub Free work best on the tub ring, as they eat through grime. Both methods need to be left to sit for a few minutes for maximum effectiveness. Rinse the whole tub thoroughly with hot water, making sure to shine up the taps and shower head as well. Both surfaces should shine when cleaned properly, and should pass the squeak test when you pass your finger over it (no soap on your fingers!)

Floors. Begin by sweeping the bathroom floor to remove any large bits or debris. A Swiffer is really great in the bathroom, as its static sheets attract hair. After sweeping, mop the floor with a simple soap and water mixture. Be sure to remove all cleaning agents from the floor by rinsing thoroughly. Residual cleaners may leave the floor slippery and dangerous. Allow the floor to dry before re-entering the bathroom.

Bathroom Cleaning Tips -- Summary

Cleaning bathrooms is a standard part of every house cleaning service, but it doesn't have to seem like a chore. These bathroom cleaning tips are fast and easy, and make cleaning bathrooms seem like a breeze.
