Cleaning Stainless Steel

Whether you're cleaning stainless steel appliances or stainless steel sinks, these methods will get the job done for your house cleaning business.

cleaning stainless steel

Stainless steel has become extremely popular over the last few years, making the leap from commercial kitchens to residential kitchens. Stainless steel appliances and sinks are quite striking and despite the fact that they have come down in price over the years, they are still quite a bit more expensive than the standard finishes.

Of course, it is more than reasonable that the homeowner would want their stainless steel looking its very best at all times. As a home cleaning professional, there are a few steps for cleaning your clients' stainless steel appliances so you can keep these items looking new.

The first step is washing with a mild soap and water. Dish soap is acceptable. Using a non abrasive sponge, wash the appliances. Then, dry with a clean towel. Next, apply a stainless steel polish. There are many on the retail market and would be acceptable at best for the homeowner to use.

Stainless steel has a grain (polishing mark) that you must follow when cleaning. Going against the grain will create permanent damage. For this reason use gentle cleaning methods.

There are different applications needed for the different stainless steel appliances will help determine what cleaning applications to use. For instance, the process is different for a sink than for a stove. The stove will, of course, give off heat. Using the incorrect cleaning method will leave a film and dull the finish over time.

While the basic cleaning steps start with hot water and gentle soap and drying, the polish should be professional grade either from a restaurant supplier or a professional cleaning supply outlet. Dirt and grime can and will destroy the appliances over time if not cleaned and polished properly.

Appliances are expensive. It is vitally important that you, the home cleaning professional, learn as much about cleaning stainless steel appliances as possible to make sure that they look their very best for years and years to come.
