Chandeliers are simply stunning. This impressive light fixture is often seen in the foyer of the home and sometimes in the dining room, creating a gorgeous focal point. Some chandeliers are made with faux crystals (made of glass or resins), which can be cleaned using window cleaner or water but if you're cleaning a light fixture with real crystal, then the following tips on how to clean a chandelier would apply.
How to Clean a Chandelier – Step One
Before you do anything, find the breaker box and turn the power off. Some people think that turning the wall switch off is all that is needed but power is still being sent so to avoid being shocked, always go to the breaker box. Additionally, if you were to shut the power off at the switch, a family member just coming home may not realize that the chandelier is being cleaned, again putting you at serious risk.
Be very careful with electric fixtures. And definitely keep all wires attached.
You'll be cleaning the chadelier with water and other liquids. Put safety first by observing this important step.
Cleaning a Chandelier – Step Two
Next, any loose or small pieces of the chandelier will need to be removed. We suggest you place light bulbs, light covers, hooks, and so on in a bag or arranged on a sheet so you keep all the parts together and safe. Once this is complete, you will need to place a plastic drop cloth underneath the chandelier. This will help protect the flooring during the cleaning process.
How to Clean a Chandelier – Step Three
In a large bowl or bucket, mix one part of regular household rubbing alcohol and three parts of warm, distilled water. Mix the ingredients well and fill a spray bottle. Before you start spraying the crystals on the chandelier, we suggest you put tape around any wiring and bulb areas so they do not get wet. Next, each of the crystals on the chandelier would be sprayed thoroughly.
Cleaning Chandeliers – Step Four
The goal is to spray each of the crystals well and then allow the dirt to drip off and onto the plastic drop cloth below. Allow the crystals to dry and when done, use window cleaner and a soft cloth to clean the remaining part of the chandelier. Before you turn the power back on at the breaker box, it is imperative that the chandelier be completely dry. We recommend you allow the light fixture to dry overnight so there is no guesswork.
How to Clean a Chandelier – Step Five
The final step we want to go over for cleaning a dirty chandelier is that if you find the crystal pendants are exceptionally dirty and even greasy, they will need to be removed and washed carefully by hand. You can use the same rubbing alcohol and water mixture and wearing rubber gloves, use a soft cloth to go over each crystal. Although this takes longer, once done and if the chandelier is cleaned and dusted every month using the above method, this cleaning method may be avoided or extended.
