Blinds are a lovely addition to any room, but can collect hard to remove dust and grease very easily. There are many different types of blinds, and each require different cleaning methods.

How to Clean Blinds -- Vinyl or Aluminum

For regular cleaning, the simplest way to clean vinyl or aluminum blinds is to get a spray bottle and fill it about three quarters full with warm water. Add some dish detergent, and gently shake the bottle. Dampen a soft cloth with this mixture, and close the blinds completely. Wipe gently down the blinds. Be careful not to use too much pressure, as this can bend the slats. Turn the blinds toward the outside, and go behind the blinds to repeat the process on the reverse side. Spray the cloth again whenever necessary to keep it damp.

how to clean blindsIf there is a significant buildup of dust on the blinds, take them down and place them in a bathtub. You can either soak them in warm soapy water, and then wipe them, or spray one side with a foaming bathroom cleaner, allow it to sit, and then spray the reverse side. Wipe them down with a sponge, and rinse them using the shower head. Allow the blinds to air dry, or help the drying process along with a large bath towel.

How to Clean Blinds -- Fabric

Fabric blinds are a bit more difficult to clean. It's important that no cleaning solutions be sprayed on fabric blinds, as they stain easily. Clean the bristles of a vacuum cleaner attachment, and vacuum each pleat or slat. Vacuuming often will prevent dirt and dust from building up on the blinds. If buildup is already present, use a textured towel or sponge dampened with water to gently wipe it away. Be careful not to get excess water on the blinds.

How to Clean Blinds -- Wood

Wood blinds are the simplest to clean. All that is needed is a quick wipe with a dry cloth. Try to avoid using cleaning products or even damp sponges, as excess moisture can cause discoloration and warping.

No matter the type of blind, it's important for the general health of the household to keep them clean. They attract a lot of dust, and inhalation of dust can lead to various health problems, including difficulty breathing. It is recommended that all blinds in the household be cleaned at least once per week. Not only will this keep the air in the home fresh, it will also prevent lengthy and difficult removal of buildup.
