For many people, ceramic tile is the ideal flooring to have in their home. It is versatile, and adds an air of elegance to any home, and it is quite durable as well. In order to keep ceramic tile looking its best however, it does need special care.

Caring for and cleaning ceramic tile is actually quite simple. General day to day care is the best way to keep tile looking great and prevent any damage from occurring. By taking just a few minutes each day to care for a tile floor, its life can be extended it will last for years. Follow these simple tips for routine cleaning...

  • Sweep the tile regularly. This will help to prevent dirt from adhering to the surface, and will not only make cleaning easier, but extend the life of the tile as well.
  • A vacuum can be used in place of a traditional broom, however make sure that the vacuum does not have a beater bar, which can cause damage to the tiles by scratching and dulling it. Scratches can turn into cracks over time. A beater bar can ruin a tile floor.
  • Wipe the floor regularly with plain warm water. This will also help to prevent dirt from building up, and keep the tile looking great.

How to Clean Ceramic Tile -- The Basics

1. Sweep or vacuum to remove dirt and debris.

2. Using a mild cleaning detergent, scrub floors with a sponge, soft mop or electric scrubber.

3. Rinse with warm water to remove any residue that may be left behind from the detergent.

4. Using a soft, dry cloth, dry the floors to remove any film that may be left behind, and to add an additional shine to the ceramic tile.

What to Avoid When Cleaning Ceramic Tile

In order to keep the tile looking its best, there are certain things that should be avoided. Do not use abrasive materials on tile like abrasive cleansers, scouring powders or steel wool, because these can scratch the tiles and cause unsightly marks that attract and hold dirt.

Use a cleanser that is safe for the kind of tile you're cleaning. If the tile is glazed, do not use an oil based cleanser. For all tile floors, avoid using ammonia or bleach based products, which will not directly damage the tile, but can discolor the grout.
