How to Clean Urine
and Remove Urine Odors

Have a client facing bedwetting? Here's how to clean urine spots and remove urine odor from mattresses. This is essential house cleaning info!

When cleaning urine stains on upholstery or a mattress, it's important to evaluate and plan your work. And remember, cleaning up urine means removing the germs that cause strong urine odor.

Use a black light to see how large the stain is. You need this information to remove all of the germs that cause urine odor. Under a black light urine glows.

When cleaning urine stains you can choose from different techniques.

The first method to remove urine stains from bed wetting is a thick paste. This needs to be a thick yet pourable paste made from water and cornstarch.

Make enough to cover the entire urine stain, when stirring make sure there are no lumps. How to clean urine using this solution requires the mixture of cornstarch over the urine stain for several hours. It is recommended to do this process overnight. This allows plenty of time for the mixture to work.

The cornstarch mixture will dry over the stain and after it is totally dry it will need to be vacuumed. When finished, once again use the black light to check and see if all the urine stain has been removed. If there is still some of the stain visible repeat the process until all the urine stain is removed.

How to clean urine using another method is fairly easy too. In this solution mix...

  • 2 parts dishwashing liquid
  • 1 part white vinegar

The first thing that needs to be done is to try to remove as much as the urine stain as possible. This can be done by using paper towels and blotting the urine. This will only work if the urine stain is still wet.

After this step has been completed the dishwashing liquid and vinegar needs to be mixed in a container. The mixture needs to be applied with a wet sponge on the urine stain.

Generously apply the mixture to the urine stain. After applying the mixture it needs to stand on the urine stain at least thirty minutes. After the thirty minute the soap mixture needs to be cleaned from the urine stain. This can be done with a clean wet sponge.

How to clean urine totally from the urine stain using this method requires sprinkling cornstarch over the urine stain. After generously sprinkling the cornstarch allow it to dry totally which could take several hours. Again leave overnight and the vacuum all the cornstarch from the urine stain. There should be no urine stain left. And the odor should be gone also.

So what if the urine stain wasn't human and the cat caused the problem? In your house cleaning business, there can be unpleasant odors. Human urine odor is different from cat urine odor. You'll know the difference, as cat urine smells more of ammonia. For this reason, never clean up urine with ammonia -- you'll just invite more problems.

To clean up cat urine from upholstery and mattresses mix...

  • one teaspoon liquid dish detergent
  • one 16 ounce bottle of hydrogen peroxide
  • one tablespoon baking soda

Mix these ingredients in a disposable or washable plastic container and stir well with a wooden or plastic spoon. After the powder ingredients dissolve, then pour the liquid into a plastic spray bottle. Spray the mixture all over the stain and make sure to spray beyond the area saturated by the urine stain. Do not touch or scrub the spot. The cleaner needs to set into the stain and then let it air dry. When the spot is totally dry vacuum the spot and if necessary wipe with a clean, dry rag.
