How to Clean Window Screens

Tips on how to clean window screens. As spring approaches, you can be sure that your clients are going to want a clear view to the outside. A basic, seasonal service offering for the house cleaning business owner.

With clean window screens, the view is better and the homeowner can enjoy a cool breeze without worrying about dirt, dust, and bugs. As you will find with these tips on how to clean window screens, you will see that some jobs are simple while others are more challenging.

Window Screen Cleaning Tip for Smaller Sized Screens

In this case, you would need to remove the screens. Next, fill the bathtub with hot water and ammonia or mild dishwashing soap. Start by taking the screens outdoors and going over them with a soft bristle brush to remove excess dirt and bugs. Then, place the screens in the bathtub of water, allowing them to soak overnight. Remind the homeowner to leave the screens in the tub and let them know that you will be back the next morning, finding an unbelievable amount of leftover dirt.

The bathtub method is most likely only an option if your clients are out of town and you're cleaning while they're gone.

How to Clean Window Screens Tip Two

We will now turn our focus to the larger screens. Again, to get the screens thoroughly clean, they need to be removed. Of course, one you have cleaned your client’s screens, you can then go over them with a brush attachment on the vacuum cleaner once a month to keep them looking great. The initial cleaning is the hardest and most time-consuming so be realistic about the amount of time and effort it will take, especially when setting prices.

Cleaning Window Screens Tip Three

For the larger screen sizes, once removed, take them outside. We recommend you use the garden hose to soak the screens, which again will help get rid of the majority of dirt and bugs. Once done, mix one part of ammonia with three parts of hot water in a bucket. With the screens wet, dip a soft bristle brush into the solution and begin scrubbing (gently!), starting at the top and working your way down. Remember, when scrubbing be careful not to apply too much pressure or the screen could be damaged.

Cleaning Window Screens Tip Four

Our final tip on how to clean window screens comes after the scrubbing. After removing all the dirt and dead bugs, you will then need to give the screens a good rinsing. You may notice one or two spots that were missed so in this case, simply dip the brush back into the ammonia/water mixture and go to work on those areas, followed by rinsing. Next, tap against the screens to remove excess water, stand the window screens up against the wall or deck, and allow them to air dry before putting them back in place.
